Family life - Carol

One of the things that makes Action for Children Zambia unique and successful is our establishment of rituals and traditions like those that exist in every family.   In traditional orphanages, these are often lacking because they are too expensive and there are too many children.  Here at AFCZ, we do everything possible to make sure all our children participate in the family traditions and learn them well enough to pass on to their own children one day.  We work hard to assure all our children have birthday gifts and cake.  We also host a fabulous annual Christmas event at Kulanga Bana that is seeped in tradition, family time, holiday baking, Christmas plays and football tournaments.  The older ones are busy teaching the younger ones and anyone who is new to our Christmas is sure to get to lick the bowl from Baby Jesus birthday cake.  Easter brings a new and different set of traditions with our holy week reconciliation retreat and the Easter triduum celebrations.  Good Friday the kids will put on one of the best Passion Plays you will ever see.  Easter Saturday, we slay the goat and Easter Sunday brings an Easter candy hunt that keeps them busy for hours!

Because AFCZ strives to restore family life to all the children under our care, these traditions are critical for us. Not only do our traditions bring great joy, they also become part of the foundation of our organization and the foundation of each child’s idea of what a family is.  Thanks to you, our donors, we can make this happen for every child under our care.  We can only say thank you! We appreciate it and because of you, we are just fine!
